[2026 REFRESH]: As the Infinity Castle arc is finally going to take over the screens this year. Genya has moved from being a kid with a gun to a fan favourite. While all are busy arguing over which Breathing Style is the strongest, Genya is proving that you don’t even need one to be one of the top slayers.
Who is Genya Shinazugawa?

If you’re looking for the most unique character in Demon Slayer, you’ve found him. Genya Shinazugawa is the younger brother of the terrifying Wind Hashira (Sanemi Shinazugawa).

Being the black sheep of the family, Genya starts as this irritable, lone-wolf jerk who hates everyone, but as you delve deeper into the Infinity Castle arc in 2026, you’ll realise that Genya is just a kid trying to get his brother’s respect while carrying the weight of a massive family tragedy.
Why Genya is Built Different
Genya is playing a completely different game from the start, while you will notice every other slayer in the corps is with a Sword + Breathing build, but not Genya.

As his body can’t handle Breathing techniques (a massive debunk to the idea that everyone can be a hero), Genya had to find a workaround. Instead of submission, he just hacked the system.
The Nichirin Shotgun (Ranged DPS)
Something which would be a complete joke in any other anime is a tactical move in Demon Slayer. Genya is the only character who literally brings a gan to a sword fight. The shotgun fires bullets made of Scarlet Crimson Sand and Ore, the same stuff as Nichirin swords.
Genya can curve his bullet shots mid-air as we’ve seen him fuse his owl demon-flesh cells with the bullets, which gives him aim-bot-like advantages against upper-rank demons.
The Demon-Eating Mechanic (The Ultimate Power-Up)
Here’s the most broken ability in Demon Slayer: Genya can literally consume the flesh of a demon and absorb their stats and powers temporarily.
This gives him instant regeneration and a massive strength boost. But it can also harm him, as the more he eats demons, the more he risks losing his humanity, but it is the only way he can fight against the upper moons.
Repetitive Action: The Focus Mod
Since Genya can’t use breathing, he uses Repetitive Action, which is kinda similar to breathing in terms of power. He recites a specific prayer (Amida Sutra ) to manually spike his heart rate and concentration, which almost matches the power of a breathing style. This is similar to manually overclocking his system, which, of course, is a high-effort and high-stress process.
The Brotherly Rift

You can’t talk about Genya without talking about Sanemi (the Wind Hashira). Sanemi isn’t a real jerk; he just acts as one on purpose, as he wants Genya to quit the Corps so he can live a normal life.
In Demon Slayer, Genya thinks that he has to be a Hashira to get his brother’s respect, but in reality, Sanemi just wants a brother who isn’t covered in demon blood.
