Surge S1, A Custom Silicon from Xiaomi is Commencing

Xiaomi mobile phone took it to Weibo to announce their latest Surge S1 chipset. The teaser referred to a small self-developed chipset. This actually lowers expectations, since it mentioned “small”. What this could mean is a secondary chip sitting right beside a prime Snapdragon or Mediatek chipset.

Developing a chipset is no easy job, doesn’t matter it is Xiaomi or Samsung. It requires time, research and development, uncountable errors, and fixes. As the announcement mentions a small chipset, this case could be something like that of Google Pixel, where the small chip is placed right beside the prime processor. The secondary chipset is loaded with limited jobs, such as image processing and machine learning.

But not to forget, the previous Surge S1 chipset released in 2017 was a complete processor. The custom silicon was used in a budget Xiaomi device. The post also mentions that the upcoming chip will be revealed on March 29th.
