Laptop Thermal-Throttling? Here’s The Easy Fix

Do you happen to own a gaming laptop? is it Thermal Throttling? Or just randomly stuttering in between out of nowhere? The problem could actually be tiny.

You might’ve tried different applications or probably tried cleaning the fans and there’s no luck! Generally, at this point, most people reach out for technical assistance or they just apply fresh thermal paste.

Thermal throttling is most commonly found in mid-range gaming laptops and other notebooks, and also on some ultrabooks. You’d be surprised to know that most of the time your device is just fine!

The easy fix that I am about to tell you might not make much sense on paper, but it surely will make sense once you try it out!

Prerequisites

MSI afterburner or any application to monitor Processor and GPU Temperature.

A screwdriver to open up your laptop, don’t worry, even a noob can do it!

Here’s how to do it!

Open up the back panel of your Laptop using a screwdriver.

Look for long copper pipes/heatsinks that connect your processor and GPU to your Fans.

Notice the place your processor and GPU are, there would be four screws, each placed on the frame.

Unscrew the screws, and gently (very gently) try to lift it, once you notice it is slightly lifting up, tighten the screws again.

Do this for both the CPU and GPU or you can just try it out with the processor.

After you are done, now clean the fans, and the vents by gently blowing air.

If you notice it is dusty, just try and clean out the dust however you can.

Now close the back panel and tighten the screws and it is done! Not much of rocket science right?

Test it out by running a game and checking the temperatures and seeing if the stuttering is there. After applying the fix, you should start getting constant stable temperatures and framerates.

What happens here is, this process just kinda re-applies the thermal paste and 85% of the time it gets fixed. Gaming laptops are robustly built and have a much longer life without running into heating issues.
