Google has finally decided to manufacture and use their own custom silicon chips for upcoming pixel devices, Pixel 6 is likely to be the first device to feature the Tensor custom silicon chip. This was very much expected after CEO Sundar Pichai announced that the firm would focus on the hardware department of devices, the previous year. Other than performance upgrades, the custom Silicon is said to deliver better functionality with AI-related tasks.

Advantages of a custom chip
The new chip would allow the firm to offer some new features which weren’t traditionally possible with Qualcomm Chips. Custom silicon also ensures better update support, in short, more updates for pixel devices! Pixel phones are also primarily known for cameras and the UI, the new chip is said to offer more flexibility with cameras, along with better image processing. Also, Google is going with Samsung LSI for the design of the chipset.
According to rumors, the Tensor SOC will reportedly use Samsung’s Exynos 2100 as its foundation, however, if it’s true then you can expect almost similar performance like that of a Snapdragon 888, as the Exynos 2100 is equivalent to the 888 in terms of performance. This also means Pixel 6 could be equally powerful like Samsung Galaxy S21 series phones.
The Tensor SOC is said to be a 5nm chip, just like Exynos 2100 and the Snapdragon 888. The Tenor SOC will also have Google’s own piece of hardware, the Titan M2 security module, which the device uses for additional security. Whenever there’s a new version of Android, the chip manufacturers work to optimize drivers for the new version of the OS which usually delays or cancels some updates, but with custom silicon chips, pixel phones can be guaranteed more updates like that of Apple and Samsung.
