Samsung has announced the LPDDR5-PIM mobile RAM module, which is the first of its kind processing-in-ram memory module. And yes, this is what you can call a smart RAM. The RAM will provide a platform for many AI-related operations, which are generally carried out by separate “AI-focused” chips. Also, the module will carry out the AI operations while consuming less power compared to other RAM modules.
What can it actually do?
AI operations such as chatbot, voice recognition, translation, etc will be carried out within the RAM which generally requires data center connectivity in smartphones. This also ensures highly efficient machine learning performance, however, there’s no clue if it will be within the RAM or the module will get an extra dedicated processor for the job.

Combining PIM in High-bandwidth memory modules could be a revolutionary change for budget category devices, as the RAM module will handle the system, as well as AI operations, also meanwhile consuming 60% less power. The RAM module will reportedly be 2X faster than other RAM modules. This will also allow smartphone manufacturers to use cheaper processors as the memory will handle more than half of the load itself.
How can it benefit you?
Generally, high-end devices come with separate AI-silicon chips to handle all the AI-related tasks and it creates a huge gap between high-end and mid-end devices. Hopefully, these RAM modules will help shorten the gap and give you more options to choose from. Samsung is planning to complete the standardization of PIM technology by early 2022.
