Here are the tweaks that you can apply
- Try changing your default DNS: Replacing your default DNS with Google DNS can actually solve many problems, such as you can access all the sites, decent browsing speed. This DNS is often faster than the default DNS that you use.
Here’s how to change your DNS.
Right Click on your ethernet/WiFi indicator and click open Network and internet settings.
Click on the Network and sharing center on the bottom right side.
Click on Change adapter settings on top left.
Right click on your network and click on properties.
Double click on Internet Protocol Version 4 TCP/IPv4
Enter the DNS manually 8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4
- Use 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz bands wisely: Note that the 2.4Ghz channel has better wall/object penetration than the 5Ghz channel, which means you may choose a 2.4Ghz connection for a faster connection if you are quite far from the router/hotspot. 5Ghz channel is better when used within close range, then it can actually flex its speed.
- Keep a check on the number of active users: If you’re a broadband user, then keep a check on the number of users that have access to your network, change your connection password if required. The more people have access to your network, the more likely you are to face a slower internet connection.
- Change your router’s MTU value: In short, MTU actually defines the largest packet size that can be sent over a connection. Standard MTU is defined to be 1500, it can be different for everyone, sometimes the right MTU size allows a better browsing speed. Generally, some of the most common MTU values that you can use are 1460, 1492, 1420, 1500.
You can also find out the correct MTU value for yourself by following the steps below.
Run CMD as administrator.
Type “ping www.yahoo.com -f -l 1492” and hit enter.
If it shows that packet needs to be fragmented then try again by increasing or decreasing the value by 10.
Keep trying until you get a successful message like the picture below.
As you can see 1462 is the perfect size for me, just add 28 to it, 1462+28 = 1490 is the perfect MTU size for me.
Now you need to manually enter the MTU value in your Router’s default settings.
*Note: Process of changing the MTU could be different for different routers.*
- Check for Firmware updates: Some connections might be slower simply because of the existing buggy firmware. Check for updates regularly, a firmware update could actually fix your connection speed.
- Move your router: Currently, there are many active 2.4Ghz channels almost everywhere, as it is also used by Bluetooth devices. Sometimes simply changing your router’s default location can boost your internet connection speed.
For Mobile devices
- Replace Old/obsolete hardware: Some old devices/phone hardware doesn’t support the newer network bands, which also could be why your 4G internet connection is slower than before. In such a scenario, you can’t do anything but replace your smartphone with a newer and more recent model.
- Use SIM card slot 1 for your internet-enabled SIM card: Always insert your SIM in the first slot to ensure better internet usage, although many firms claim that you can have dual 4G/5G standby, experts mostly advise using SIM slot 1 for internet usage.
- Reset your network configuration: You can try resetting your network configuration if your internet is slow all of a sudden in your device. *Perform reset only if you know your settings*
- Get your phone checked: Sometimes this could also be because of physical damage, get your phone checked if it has faced a fall or if there’s any other physical damage.
After changing the DNS setting, my internet connection speed boost up.
